ribbon, pins, wall

Last night's opening of the West Michigan Area Show, Kalamazoo Intstitute of Arts...juried, 660 entries, 104 chosen pieces...tremendously diverse pieces.

This caught my eye, reminding me of my honeycomb geometry. One piece White Ribbon, pins in the wall on penciled grid. probably 6 ft square.

  1. I'm always intrigued by these kinds of installations because I wonder how tenuous they are? Can you tell me? What would happen if it got bumped, how would anyone purchase this if it is an installation on a gridded wall, etc. I love the graphic look of it.

  2. Neva -- amazing work but I think I'd get a headache with all those pins? also amazing what inspires artists, isn't it?

  3. kelly and teri....i know. interesting what does inspire, and yikes. all those pins. imagine the dusting? can't go THERE. so entries were submitted via the net or on disk, therefore, this person had to create this and photograph it, and when accepted, come down to the art center and grid the wall there and reconstruct. can you see the pencil lines on the wall? love the shadowed repeated patterns, for sure.

  4. wow, this is just an amazing installation, it should be under glass for sale and mounted on board, don't you think?

  5. cat...that's EXACTLY what i think. the 5 thousand dollar price must be there because it's probably REALLY NOT FOR SALE...for the reasons you mentioned! i mean, who'd have someone come in and pin ribbon to the wall, so unstable...lovely effect, those shadows and shapes made.

  7. Hard to believe that this piece had to be recreated and installed at the gallery...it is quite amazing though! Yes, I think the artist must have OCD....or something....I wonder how long it took to complete? Thank you Neva for posting it.

  9. I enjoyed zooming in to the detail shot..... seeing the pencil lines, pins and shadows. Imagine trying to keep it dust free with the hoover .... Oh my word!

  10. WOW - Patience with shadows. Makes me think about the setups for those domino displays - where "someone (ones?)" perfectly line up all those dominos - to fall over at a prescribed time. Patience and planning. For display.

  15. I love things like this, just imagine what must have gone into a piece like this. I wonder what she was thinking while she went on and on?
